Overview

A walk through historic Jeddah — Al-Balad — among the surviving craft workshops: carpentry, wood carving and roshan making. It is not just watching: we stop in two workshops and you work with your hands under the craftsman’s supervision. Your guide explains Al-Balad’s architecture, its coral-stone houses and how the roshan screens were built to ventilate a house in Jeddah’s humidity. An evening walk through narrow, shaded lanes.

    A practical explanation of how a roshan is assembled and how it ventilates a house.
